Water is used on low
alloy like 1045. This
cold soaking will may
bring risks of distortion
and even some cracks.

Oil is used on low alloy steel as
4140, 4340, 52100 with low risk
of distortion.


u CASE HARDENING
Soaking in a salted bath insure
a rapid diffusion of carbon in
steel. Bringing hardness
on surface at (0.005”
to 0.100”). Steel 8620,
9310, 1018 ...


u TEMPERING
Heating done at low temperature
after soaking to take away the
fragility while adjusting the desired
hardness.


u ANNEALING
This heating process is done at
high temperature in order to
completely soften the steel com-
pletely in order to make it easier
to machine and also to stabilize
the metal structure.


u STRESS RELIEVE
Used at a lower temperature than
the annealing that could reach
1250 F. This process eliminates the
welding stress improves the stabi-
lity before machining.


u NORMALIZING
Reaching high temperature, this
process will give ferrite-perlite
structure and a homogenous
structure.


u AGING (precipitation heat
treatment)

Maintain material at a
certain low temperature.
This forms hardening
which cause a
premature aging.
u SOLUTION HEAT TREATMENT
A first hardening treatment is
necessary for certain cast pieces to
obtain the desirable hardness.



u FLAME HARDENING
Hardening the surface
with the help of a
blow-torch, increases the hardness
and the mechanical properties at
designated areas.


u NITRIDING TREATMENT
This process permits to
harden superficially tools
already machined without
distortion. It also
increases the toughness
wearness and distortion.

4340 HT, 4140 HT, D-2, A-2, M-2, S-7.

u CRYOGENIC TREATMENT
With this treatment, the temperature
may be going up to 300 F,

against corrosion and
abrasion. It creates
through chemical reaction,
a dense oxide of black color to the
